Atlético beat Inter on penalties to reach the quarter-finals

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place at 11:00 GMT on Friday, March 15, with Atlético’s potential opponents being Arsenal, Barcelona, Cheap Bayern Munich soccer shirts, Manchester City, Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, who beat PSV Eindhoven in Wednesday’s other match.

Two Champions League tiebreakers in two days

Inter, who lost 1-0 to Manchester City in last season’s final, were the first to contest the tie-breaker, but Oblak saved two of the first three kicks he faced. Atlético’s Saul Niguez also missed, with Yann Sommer blocking his shot.

However, Memphis Depay, Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa all converted their penalties to take Atlético into the last 16 and complete a superb comeback.

Serie A leaders Inter won 1-0 in the first leg in Italy and looked to be on their way to victory when they doubled their lead on Wednesday through Federico Dimarco’s first-time shot following a Nicolo Barella break down the left.

But Atlético scored a goal two minutes later to level the match.

Koke’s pass wasn’t deflected, Benjamin Pavard cut the ball back and Antoine Griezmann reacted quickly to give his team hope of a memorable comeback.

Substitute Depay hit the post for Atlético, who were looking for the goal they needed.

The goal soon came, with Depay’s low shot in the 87th minute going into the back of the net, much to the delight of the passionate home fans.

Riquelme, another substitute for Atlético, had a glorious chance to win the tie, but shot wide in the third minute of stoppage time, taking the game into extra time, with neither team able to find the decisive goal before the drama of penalties.

Before this week, there hadn’t been a penalty shoot-out in the Champions League since the 2016 final, when Real Madrid beat Atlético to lift the trophy.

Now there have been two in two days, after Arsenal beat Porto in similar fashion at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

Inter lose for the first time in 2024

Diego Simeone’s Atlético are fourth in La Liga, 14 points behind leaders Real, and were knocked out by Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.

The club has never won the European Cup Winners’ Cup or the Champions League, losing the final in 1974, 2014 and 2016, but kept its hopes alive this season by becoming the first team to beat Camisas de futebol cheap Inter Milan kids in 2024.
